WHAT ARE WARTS ?
Genital Warts
are the most common sexually transmitted disease
caused by a virus. The human papillomavirus, or
HPV, of which there are over 90 known variants.
According to the
American Social Health Association, approximately
5.5 million new cases of sexually transmitted HPV
infections are reported every year. At least 20
million Americans are already infected.
The warts don't
generally cause any serious long term health
problems. It is up to the individual whether they
are treated or not and it is sometimes known for
them to clear up by themselves.
Genital warts
are flesh-colored or gray growths found in the
genital area and anal region in both men and
women.
Genital warts
affect both men and women and can occur at any
age.
- Most cases are seen
between the ages of 17-33 years. It is
highly contagious. You have a 60% risk of
getting the infection in a single sexual
contact with someone who has genital
warts, usually within three months of
contact.
- The warts can appear
as single bumps or in clusters some
having a cauliflower structure.
- Genital warts are
easily treated, although it's unusual for
one treatment to be enough.
-
There are
many strains or types of the HPV (wart)
virus. Some warts grow on the body such
as a Flat Wart. Others grow on the hands,
the Plantar Wart ( or planter wart )
grows under the feet. The warts virus is
also found in the genital area including
in and around the anus, vagina, and on
the penis.
Many HPV infections are invisible.
This means that the virus has altered the DNA
structure of the cell but shows no visible signs
on the skin. Millions of people are unaware that
they have HPV because they are no visible
growths. In this situation only a medical
sampling of the skin will determine if the virus
is prevalent.
The main strains of the virus
include - Common Warts that usually grow on the
hands, often affecting children, Planter Wart (
or plantar wart ) which grow on the soles of the
feet affecting many athletes and can be very
painful, Flat Wart that grow in large numbers or
clusters and Genital Wart.
Genital
warts are spread during oral, genital, or anal
sex with an infected partner.
In women, the
warts occur on the outside and inside of the
vagina, on the opening (cervix) to the womb
(uterus), or around the anus. In men, genital
warts are less common. If present, they usually
are seen on the tip of the penis. They also may
be found on the shaft of the penis, on the
scrotum, or around the anus. In rare cases,
genital warts can also develop in the mouth or
throat of a person who has had oral sex with an
infected person.
WHY ME ?
Why did you
contract genital warts ? Apart from the fact that
HPV is highly infectious, some people just appear
prone to warts. Your immune system can make a
difference and just like other types of virus,
the common cold for example , some people are
just more susceptible to contracting it than
others. Other factors such as age and a weakened
immune system will also affect how easily you
become infected by the virus. Younger people and
children are much better at fighting the virus
for one reason or another.
If the skin has
been damaged, no matter how miniscule the tear
may be, then this can also elevate the spread of
the warts. Broken and grazed skin or just from
shaving can all affect how the outbreak will
propagate.
REMEMBER:
You can't catch genital warts from sharing baths,
towels, cups, plates or cutlery, or from toilet
seats.
DIAGNOSIS
A doctor or
other health care worker can usually diagnose
genital warts with a visual examination. Women
with genital warts should also be examined for
possible HPV infection of the cervix.
If you
believe that you are infected you should seek
medical attention.

DANGERS
Cervical
Cancer
The
strain of HPV that causes genital warts has also
been linked to an increased risk of contracting
cervical cancer in some women. A Pap test can be
performed, whereby a sample of cells from the cervix
are taken and are then examined under the
microscope.
Pregnancy
and Childbirth
Genital warts
may cause a number of problems during pregnancy.
Sometimes they get larger during pregnancy, due
to a temporary weakening of the women's immune
system. making it difficult to urinate. If the
warts are in the vagina, they can make the vagina
less elastic and cause obstruction during
delivery.
PREVENTION
Talk to
your partner about how to protect
yourselves before you have sex.
A male or
female condom can provide protection from
most STIs if used correctly every time
you have sex. But remember condoms can't
offer full protection against genital
warts; this is because the virus is
passed on through direct skin-to-skin
contact, but a condom only covers the
penis and not the whole genital area.
TREATMENTS
Although
treatments can remove the warts a person may
carry the virus for the rest of their lives. As
the virus is still present in your body warts
will often recur after treatment.
In some cases
the warts may disappear naturally, without any
treatment. In other cases, they may develop a
fleshy, small raised growth that looks like
cauliflower. There is no way to predict whether
the warts will grow or disappear. Therefore, if
you suspect you have genital warts, you should be
examined and treated, if necessary.
If you have
small warts, the doctor can remove them by
freezing (cryosurgery), burning (electrocautery),
or laser treatment. Occasionally, the doctor will
have to use surgery to remove large warts that
have not responded to other treatment.
Various creams
are available, although some such as Condylox may
cause irritation if not applied correctly.
Alternative natural formulas are also available
and some people find these very effective and a
lot less painful.
